The contribution of the Jadids to the formation of Uzbek media

The article examines the contribution of the Jadid movement to the emergence of Uzbek media at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Drawing on the works of Khalid, DeWeese, Abduazizova, Said Ziyo, Azimov and others, it reconstructs the main stages in the formation of a national press in Turkestan. Jadid periodicals such as Taraqqiy, Samarkand, Sadoi Turkiston, and Oyina are shown to have functioned not only as channels for spreading reformist ideas, but also as key instruments for creating a new public sphere, modernizing education, and codifying the modern Uzbek literary language. The paper analyses the epistemic, technical and political functions of the press, the professionalization of journalism, and the emergence of a new media actor – the secular intellectual-journalist. Particular attention is paid to the role of Jadids in the early Soviet Uzbek press and their subsequent marginalization and repression. The conclusion discusses the contemporary reinterpretation of Jadid media heritage in independent Uzbekistan and its significance for understanding the long-term trajectories of national journalism.
