This article examines how major social media platforms act as catalysts in the formation, diffusion, and evolution of contemporary English slang. Drawing on quantitative and qualitative analyses of Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok corpora from 2015 to 2024, the study identifies patterns of slang innovation, including phonological abbreviations, semantic shifts, and the emergence of multimodal forms. The findings demonstrate that platform affordances – such as character limits and multimedia features – influence the velocity and variety of slang adoption, suggesting new directions for sociolinguistic research and pedagogy.
