Annotatsiya

This article examines the gender dimension of the Jadid press in early twentieth-century Central Asia. Drawing on the works of Kamp, Melentev, Kurbanova, Nurullayev and other scholars, it explores how Uzbek-language newspapers and journals (Taraqqiy, Samarkand, Sadoi Turkiston, Sadoi Farghona, Oyina and others) reshaped notions of family, marriage and the status of Muslim women. The analysis shows that women’s education, criticism of child and forced marriage, and the rethinking of polygamy and female seclusion were framed by the Jadids as essential conditions for national and cultural revival. Particular attention is paid to the construction of the “new woman” as literate, socially active and present in the public sphere, yet still anchored in traditional roles as wife and mother. The article highlights internal tensions within the Jadid gender project and situates it within broader debates on modernity and women’s rights in colonial and early Soviet Central Asia. It concludes that the Jadid press functioned as a laboratory for new gender norms and long-term imaginaries of the relationship between women, family, nation and media in the Uzbek context.
