Annotatsiya

This article analyses the semantic field of the Mandarin adverbs 才 (cái) and 就 (jiù) within semantic-field theory. Meanings that appear unrelated in traditional accounts (temporal, quantitative, conditional, emphatic) are in fact projections of a single conceptual structure onto different relational domains. Three principal axes of the field — time, quantity and condition — are examined in turn, and the opposing function of 才 and 就 in each is established. The result reveals the unified scalar principle underlying the field: 就 locates the actual value lower than expected (earlier / less), whereas 才 locates it higher (later / more). The findings are related to questions of translation equivalence into Uzbek.
