In the context of the digitalization of media consumption, South Korea represents an advanced case of transformation in the news industry. The main actor and media-dominant force in the South Korean market is the internet portal Naver.com, which functions as a digital gatekeeper. The platform performs algorithmic curation of content, controlling 62% of the search segment and more than half of the national news distribution ecosystem. This article examines the concept of Naver’s “algorithmic gateway”. Drawing on the theoretical framework of media studies, the study analyzes three aspects of platformization and algorithmic power: market monopoly, the editorial prerogative of algorithms, and the crisis of content aggregation caused by the expansion of artificial intelligence. The author argues that the “algorithmic gateway” transforms the classical agenda-setting model and forms a hybrid type of editorial power that does not institutionally fall under media regulation or antitrust legislation.
