This article analyzes the study of ambivalence in comparative linguistics and clarifies its terminological boundaries. Ambivalence is interpreted as a lexical-semantic and contextual phenomenon in which at least two semantic layers are simultaneously actualized in a single text. The article differentiates ambivalence from ambiguity, polysemy, homonymy, implication, and punning. The views of M. Bréal, F. de Saussure, Ch. Bally, W. Empson, S. Ullmann, J. Lyons, D. Cruse, and other scholars are used as the theoretical foundation of the study. The analysis shows that in English, Russian, and Uzbek linguistics, this phenomenon has been studied under different names, while its central feature remains the coexistence of several semantic possibilities within a single textual environment.
