This article seeks to provide a more detailed examination, as a distinct subject of study, of Adab al-Dunya wa al-Din (“The Ethics of Worldly Life and Religion”) by Abul-Hasan al-Mawardi, a scholar who played an important role in the development of statehood and political and legal thought in the Muslim East during the tenth and eleventh centuries, as well as of the term Mansur al-Hikam contained in the work. These issues are analyzed from a scholarly and comparative perspective. Written before the author’s detailed examination of the system of state governance, the institutions of the sultanate and the imamate, and the functions of the branches of authority, this work also served to improve the social order of the state and address spiritual and moral deficiencies. The article systematically and comparatively examines views concerning the establishment of justice in society. It highlights positive examples from historical state policy and governance, provides illustrations from the conduct, history, development, and causes of decline of ancient rulers and states, and identifies the fundamental principles and conditions upon which effective and advanced governance should be based.
