This article examines the phenomenon of code-switching in Uzbek–English mixed speech from sociolinguistic and linguopragmatic perspectives. The study is based on naturally occurring spoken data collected from university students’ academic interactions, which allows for the identification of both social and pragmatic functions of code-switching. The findings indicate that English is predominantly used to express academic precision, technological terminology, and institutional requirements, while Uzbek serves to maintain interpersonal solidarity and cultural identity. The article argues that code-switching should be viewed not as a sign of linguistic deficiency but as a context-sensitive and goal-oriented communicative strategy within academic discourse.
