This article examines the aesthetic impact of a literary text through the integration of the cognitive approach and the theory of intertextuality. The study interprets literariness not as a product of the author’s individual skill but as a phenomenon formed through cognitive processes and intertextual relations that arise in the reader’s mind. Intertextuality is explained as a cognitive mechanism that activates prior texts and cultural codes stored in the reader’s memory. The transformation of an image into a concept in the reader’s consciousness, the intertextual-cognitive model of metaphor and symbol, as well as the psycholinguistic foundations of aesthetic impact, are discussed as the main criteria of literariness.
