This article explores the development of students’ self-assessment and metacognitive skills as essential components of effective learning. Self-assessment enables learners to evaluate their own academic progress, identify weaknesses, and adjust their study strategies independently. Metacognitive skills—such as planning, monitoring, and evaluating one’s thinking—support deeper awareness and intentional regulation of cognitive processes. The study examines the interrelation between these competencies, highlights successful instructional approaches, and discusses motivational and organizational factors that enhance students’ responsibility and autonomy. Practical recommendations include incorporating reflective tasks, strengthening self-monitoring techniques, and integrating metacognitive strategies into teaching practices. The findings demonstrate that these skills significantly improve students’ academic performance, learning independence, and overall engagement.
