This article presents a comparative analysis of A. Chekhov’s short story “Chameleon” and A. Qahhor’s “Nationalists,” focusing on the artistic mastery involved in creating literary images and characters. In both works, the image of a dog is used as a device to reveal negative social traits such as sycophancy, philistinism, opportunism, and hypocrisy. In Chekhov’s story, Ochumelov’s careerist and ever-changing “chameleon” nature is expressed through dialogue and actions, while in Qahhor’s work the characters Mirza Bahrom and Tavhidiy are exposed through their attempts to demonstrate closeness to a wealthy man by means of the dog. The article also highlights Chekhov’s influence on Uzbek short-story writing, particularly as reflected in Qahhor’s творчество, and examines how satire serves as a tool for social criticism.
