Annotatsiya

This study offers a comprehensive analysis of crimes within Uzbekistan’s student environment using official statistics, academic research, and self-reports. The “student environment” covers secondary and higher education (lyceums, vocational colleges, universities; full- and part-time students). Methods include descriptive trend analysis, cross-tabulation by demographic and institutional factors, and assessment of latent crime and victimization. Key findings: students represent a notable share of youth crime (e.g., 5.3% in Tashkent, 2024); common offences among university students are traffic incidents, thefts, and drug-related offences, while school-age offenders more often commit violence and petty theft. Most offenders are young males (16–25), with peer influence and socio-economic pressures prominent. A large portion of student offending remains unrecorded due to underreporting and institutional concealment. The paper examines determinants (inequality, educational environment factors, individual psychological traits) and current prevention efforts — from school police and mentoring programs to research and international initiatives — and concludes with evidence-based recommendations to strengthen prevention, improve student crime data collection, and foster a law-abiding youth culture.
