Annotatsiya

The French colonial system in Algeria was characterized by a distinctive form of settler colonialism, marked by large-scale land expropriation and profound demographic transformations. Unlike other colonial territories, which were administered primarily for economic exploitation, Algeria was regarded as an integral part of France. European settlers appropriated vast tracts of fertile land, dispossessing the indigenous Algerian population and drastically reshaping the agrarian economy. The French government actively encouraged European migration, resulting in the emergence of a settler elite that dominated both the political and economic spheres. Political scientist Patrick Wolfe observed that settler colonialism is premised on a logic of eliminating indigenous presence, a process that systematically marginalized native populations. In Algeria, this dynamic manifested through land confiscation, economic exclusion, and socio-political discrimination, intensifying tensions between the settlers and the local inhabitants.
