The article analyzes the legal nature of the investigative action of obtaining samples for expert examination, its conceptual foundations, and theoretical aspects. Existing scientific views on the legal nature of samples are systematized, and their criminal procedural status and evidentiary significance are elucidated. As a result of the research, it is substantiated that samples constitute a special type of material evidence.
