This article examines the tasks and functions of defense attorneys in the adversarial criminal proceedings of the Republic of Uzbekistan. It analyzes the evolution of the defense attorney's legal status following the introduction of the adversarial principle in 1994 and the transformation from an inquisitorial model to a system ensuring equality of the parties. The main tasks of a defense attorney under Article 49 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Uzbekistan are considered: protecting the rights of suspects, accused persons, and defendants; representing them; and providing legal assistance. The key functions of the defense attorney are highlighted, including the new function of reconciling parties at the pre-trial stage. The author substantiates the close interconnection between the tasks and functions of a defense attorney in ensuring fair justice.
