This article systematically outlines the nature, genesis, structural components, and didactic characteristics of a connectivist digital learning environment (CDLE). The evolution of the digital learning environment is traced through four technological and pedagogical stages: computer-assisted instruction (CAI), computer-supported learning, Internet-based e-learning, and the modern connectivist digital learning environment. The definitions proposed by JISC, EDUCAUSE NGDLE, and A. W. Bates are comparatively analyzed, and the author’s working definition is proposed. Five structural components of CDLE are substantiated: subject-related, content-related, technological, institutional-organizational, and sociocultural. The article also substantiates eight didactic characteristics of CDLE: networkedness, openness, adaptivity, multimodality, autonomy, reflectivity, continuity, and ecologicality.
