This article examines the European Convention on the Protection of the Profession of Lawyer (CETS No. 226), adopted in 2025, and its significance for reforming the legal profession in Uzbekistan. It shows that the Convention transforms existing international standards and principles on the independence of the legal profession—previously framed largely as “soft law”—into a contractually binding regime with implementation monitoring, securing three main guarantee blocks: (1) institutional independence of self-government and participation of the representative body of the legal profession in norm-making; (2) independent admission to the profession and independent formation and activity of disciplinary commissions; and (3) procedural mechanisms for protecting attorney–client privilege (including the right to counsel’s presence). On this basis, phased guidelines are substantiated for incorporating the Convention’s provisions into Uzbekistan’s national legislation: specific amendments to the special law and procedural codes; institutional separation of qualification and disciplinary commissions; development of external independent collegial expertise; and enhanced international cooperation. The article concludes that CETS No. 226 should be taken into account when preparing the draft new Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On Advocacy and Advocacy.”
