This article provides an in-depth analysis of land and water relations in the Fergana Valley—particularly in the territory of present-day Kuvasay—during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Under the Kokand Khanate, forms of land ownership were a key factor shaping socio-economic relations. The study examines land use through tenancy and the kharaj taxation system during the reign of Khudoyar Khan, the role of the sarkar institution, and the involvement of village elders (aqsaqals) and amin officials in local governance. It notes that, after the establishment of Russian imperial rule, land relations were redirected to serve state interests, leading to landlessness, growing indebtedness, and heightened social tensions. The importance of waqf lands and the irrigation system for agriculture is also highlighted. The article substantiates that in Kuvasay, land and water relations—under the impact of historical processes—became a crucial factor in shaping economic and social life.
