This article analyzes the concept, objectives, and distinctive features of examination in criminal procedure. The author conducts a comparative analysis of definitions proposed by national and foreign scholars, revealing the essence and legal nature of this institution. The article proposes a new definition: an examination is an investigative action comprising the direct or indirect identification, observation, evaluation, and recording of properties of objects that have probable significance for establishing the truth in criminal cases or in pre-investigation materials, carried out by authorized officials. The study examines specific features of examination, distinguishes between its purposes and tasks, and presents practical proposals. The research results may serve as a theoretical basis for improving criminal-procedural legislation and its practical application.
