Understanding them requires abstract thinking, combining meanings, and cultural knowledge, rather than just memorizing. Research indicates that familiarity, concreteness, and sentence complexity have a significant impact on interpretation. Findings reveal that patients with aphasia, right-hemisphere lesions, or Alzheimer’s disease face difficulties in interpreting unfamiliar proverbs, highlighting their value as diagnostic tools. Developmental research shows that understanding improves from adolescence to adulthood. This change involves moving from relying on concrete ideas to using more analogical reasoning. Cultural and generational studies suggest that recognition is influenced by ethnicity, exposure, and passing down knowledge through generations, with younger individuals becoming less familiar with proverbs. Overall, understanding proverbs reflects the interaction of cognitive, linguistic, and cultural factors and provides insights into language development, academic success, and the evaluation of higher-level thinking skills.
