This article examines the methodological potential of a genre-based approach to enhancing secondary school students’ writing skills in English. Contemporary language education increasingly views writing not simply as the production of grammatically correct sentences, but as purposeful communication shaped by audience, context, genre and communicative intention. The article discusses the theoretical foundations of genre-based pedagogy and focuses on model-text analysis, joint construction, independent writing, feedback and revision. Particular attention is paid to the ways in which genre awareness can support students in organizing ideas, selecting appropriate vocabulary and grammar, developing cohesion and adapting language to a particular communicative situation. The article also considers criterion-based assessment of written products and the integration of genre pedagogy with process writing, collaborative learning and formative assessment. The analysis suggests that systematic genre instruction can make writing tasks more meaningful, transparent and manageable for secondary school learners. Rather than providing fixed templates, genre-based teaching should help students understand how textual choices are connected with communicative purposes and social contexts.
