The article is devoted to a comparative analysis of I. A. Bunin’s short story “Sunstroke” and V. S. Tokareva’s short story “Between Sky and Earth,” which are united by a shared conception of love. Both stories are based on a common plot pattern: a chance encounter in a transitional space, a sudden flash of feeling designated as a “sunstroke,” and a separation initiated by the heroine; however, Bunin and Tokareva realize this plot in opposing artistic styles. The study compares the chronotope, the system of character nomination, the motifs of death and memory, composition, and forms of authorial presence in the two works.
