This article examines the distinctive trust model constructed by Japanese commercial television channels within the broader configuration of Japan’s media system. Drawing on institutional analysis, cultural theory, and comparative media studies, the paper investigates how keiretsu corporate ties, the kisha club system, and cultural norms of consensus interact with market competition to produce a specific pattern of audience trust formation. The article argues that Japanese commercial broadcasting constitutes a “fourth model” that cannot be adequately explained by existing Western frameworks. Digital disruption trends and their impact on established trust mechanisms are also addressed.
