This article examines the evolution and theoretical frameworks of the travel literature genre throughout the 20th century. Moving beyond mere descriptive accounts of foreign lands, 20th-century travel writing underwent a profound transformation driven by shifts in colonialism, globalization, and literary modernism. The study first traces the formation of the genre, analyzing the transition from imperialistic travelogues to more introspective, subjective, and fragmented narratives. The second part provides a theoretical analysis, employing lenses such as Post-colonialism, Semiotics, and Phenomenology to understand how travelers construct "the Other" and the "Self." By evaluating key authors and stylistic shifts—from the romanticized journeys of the early century to the postmodern, deconstructive travelogues of the late 20th century—this research highlights how the genre reflects changing human perceptions of space, identity, and cultural encounter. The findings suggest that travel literature in this period serves not just as a record of movement, but as a critical site for negotiating the complexities of a shrinking world.
