This article provides a systematic analysis of the methodological foundations, origins, and historical stages of development of areal linguistics and geolinguistics, tracing their evolution from traditional empirical dialectological methods to modern digital and computational paradigms. The study thoroughly examines the trajectory from the creation of early fundamental atlases in global geolinguistics to its contemporary state, characterized by Geographic Information Systems (GIS), dialectometric modeling, Levenshtein distance, Voronoi polygons, and methods for converting linguistic data into matrix-based frameworks. Furthermore, the paper demonstrates the theoretical and practical frameworks for analyzing linguistic variation and areal continua using advanced global quantitative practices and digital tools.
