International university rankings have become a powerful external reference framework that increasingly shapes the strategic, pedagogical, and managerial decisions of higher education institutions. At the same time, internal quality assurance systems are expected to deliver continuous improvement, learning-cantered outcomes and academic integrity. The article offers a narrative review of contemporary scholarship on the theoretical and pedagogical foundations of aligning university quality assurance with global ranking indicators. Drawing on studies of world-class universities, ranking methodologies, internal quality assurance models, quality culture and constructive alignment, the article argues that genuine alignment is not a matter of imitating ranking metrics but of reinterpreting them as developmental indicators embedded in an institution’s pedagogical mission. Three interlocking foundations are proposed: an epistemological foundation grounded in constructive alignment and learning outcomes; an institutional foundation built on quality culture and shared academic responsibility; and a managerial foundation that uses ranking indicators as evidence-based input for strategic decision-making rather than as ends in themselves. The discussion underlines that pedagogically meaningful alignment requires moving from compliance to improvement, from quantitative outputs to learning value, and from administrative reporting to participatory academic governance.
