Annotatsiya

This article examines the system of moral concepts in the novellas of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov from an axiological perspective. The aim of the study is to identify the distinctive features of the artistic conceptualization of value categories and the mechanisms of their functioning within the structure of Chekhovian texts. The analysis demonstrates that key moral concepts — life, labor, freedom, responsibility, and compassion — are presented as dynamic and internally contradictory elements that resist unambiguous interpretation. It is established that the specificity of Chekhov’s axiology is determined by his rejection of direct authorial evaluation, his focus on the inner experience of the individual, and the open-ended nature of artistic meaning. The article concludes that Chekhov’s prose gives rise to a distinctive type of moral consciousness, one founded on the problematization of traditional values and the active role of the reader in the process of their interpretation.
