This study examines the transformation of reading culture in the digital age, with particular attention to the role of social media platforms in shaping literary engagement among contemporary readers. As traditional modes of reading undergo profound changes driven by technological innovation and the ubiquity of digital devices, understanding how social media influences reading habits, book selection, and reader interaction has become a matter of considerable scholarly and practical importance. Employing a mixed-methods research design, this investigation surveyed 240 university students and conducted semi-structured interviews with 30 participants to explore the nature and extent of social media’s impact on reading behavior. Quantitative analysis revealed that 78.3% of respondents reported that social media platforms significantly influenced their book selection decisions, while 64.2% indicated that participation in online reading communities increased their overall reading frequency. Qualitative findings identified four primary mechanisms through which social media shapes literary engagement: algorithmic content curation, peer recommendation networks, participatory reading practices, and the gamification of reading through tracking applications. The results demonstrate that while social media has expanded access to literary discourse and diversified reading practices, it has simultaneously introduced challenges including shortened attention spans, preference for condensed content, and the commercialization of literary recommendation. These findings carry significant implications for educators, librarians, publishers, and policymakers seeking to promote sustained and meaningful reading engagement in an increasingly digital literary landscape.
