This article examines the pedagogical foundations of assessing writing skills in English as a foreign language and modern methodological approaches to their development. Writing is considered a complex cognitive activity that involves grammatical accuracy, lexical richness, logical coherence, and communicative purpose. The study analyzes two main approaches to teaching writing: the product-based approach and process-based approach. It also discusses modern assessment methods, including formative assessment, authentic assessment, and performance-based assessment. Based on Frey’s concept of authentic assessment, the study proposes a collaborative reflective authentic assessment model. This model integrates self-assessment and peer assessment techniques and aims to enhance students’ critical thinking, reflection, and collaborative skills.
