The article examines the linguistic means of representing the emotion of “grief” in A. S. Pushkin’s prose based on The Belkin Tales. The relevance of the study is determined by the interest of modern linguistics in the problems of emotive semantics, the linguistic representation of a character’s inner state, and the specific features of Pushkin’s prose as one of the most important stages in the development of the Russian literary language. The aim of the article is to identify the main lexical and contextual means of conveying the emotion of grief in A. S. Pushkin’s prose works. The study employs descriptive, lexical-semantic, contextual, and interpretive methods of analysis. It has been established that in Pushkin’s prose the emotion of grief is expressed primarily through verbal vocabulary, descriptions of external emotional manifestations, gestures, and somatic reactions of the characters. It is shown that the author uses precise and concise linguistic means to convey various shades of grief, ranging from an inner emotional breakdown to an openly expressed emotional experience. Of particular importance are verbs denoting crying, mental suffering, and bodily reaction, as well as artistic details that reveal the psychological state of the character without extended authorial commentary. It is concluded that one of the characteristic features of Pushkin’s prose is the representation of intense emotional states through outwardly concrete, stylistically restrained, and semantically rich linguistic means.
