The article examines the motif of kinship in M. A. Sholokhov’s epic novel And Quiet Flows the Don as one of the key semantic dominants of the work. It analyzes the role of the family in the Cossack world and the artistic forms used to depict the destruction of family ties during a period of historical upheaval. The study concludes that the motif of kinship performs not only a thematic but also a structure-forming function in the novel, while the disintegration of the Melekhov family becomes an expression of the broader tragedy of national life.
