The article examines the realia of scientific culture as a specific object of translation combining the features of special vocabulary and nationally marked units. The relevance of the study is determined by the expansion of international academic communication, the growing number of translated scholarly texts, and the need for an adequate rendering of units related to the institutional organization of science, academic statuses, genres of scholarly communication, and norms of professional interaction. The aim of the article is to identify the specific features of the realia of scientific culture and to determine the main ways of rendering them in interlingual communication. The study employs descriptive, comparative, and contextual methods, as well as elements of functional-pragmatic analysis. It has been established that the realia of scientific culture cannot be reduced to ordinary non-equivalent vocabulary, since their translation is associated not only with the search for a dictionary equivalent, but also with the need to take into account differences in national models of scientific organization, academic certification, and discursive norms. The article shows that the most productive ways of rendering such units are transliteration, calquing, descriptive translation, functional equivalent, translator’s commentary, and combined strategies. It is concluded that an adequate translation of the realia of scientific culture requires a comprehensive consideration of linguistic, linguocultural, and pragmatic factors.
