Annotatsiya

The article examines the pragmalinguistic mechanisms of humor formation in the English language through violations of Grice’s Cooperative Principle maxims. The aim of the study is to identify the ways in which a comic effect is created through deviations from the maxims of quantity, quality, relation, and manner. The research employs pragmalinguistic and context-interpretative methods of analysis. It is demonstrated that humor arises from a mismatch between the expected and the actual meaning of an utterance. Violations of the maxims are realized through irony, over- or under-informativeness, topic shift, and ambiguity, which activate the interpretation of implicatures.
