This paper analyzes the pragmatic and linguistic-cultural characteristics of anthroponyms used in English literature. It demonstrates that the choice of proper names in literary texts is neither random nor unrelated to the author's ideas, cultural values, and communicative goals. It shows how anthroponyms serve to reflect a character's personality, social status, national mentality, and historical period.
