The article analyzes the views of the Jadids, particularly Mahmudhoja Behbudi, on the development and improvement of the Uzbek language and reveals the scholar’s contribution to the formation of functional stylistics. Of particular importance is the fact that Mahmudkhoja Behbudi’s textbook Kitobat ul-atfol, intended for primary school students of the Jadid “Usuli savtiya” schools, includes the teaching of letter and epistle writing in the official style, while the “Projects” compiled by him contain the statutes of the first political parties. Behbudi’s efforts to grant the Uzbek language the status of a state language, to achieve its recognition as a literary language and its transformation into a medium of official communication, to define the features of its use within the framework of functional styles, to standardize lexical units related to Arabic, Persian-Tajik, Russian, and other languages in the national vocabulary, and to address the methodological aspects of language teaching constituted key components of his linguistic doctrine. The article also analyzes Mahmudkhoja Behbudi’s drama Padarkush.
