This article examines the essence and content of the concepts of competence, competency, and the competency-based approach. In particular, in a discussion with other authors regarding the definition of these concepts, the author presents their own view on their essence. Based on the analysis of scientific works by several scholars, the components that constitute the concepts of competence, competency, and the competency-based approach are identified. Attention is drawn to the relationship of these concepts with professional knowledge, abilities, and skills. In addition, the article presents a perspective on the origin and development of this issue. It is noted that the origin and further development of this problem should be determined not from the time when the term “competency” was introduced, but from the moment when attention was first drawn to the importance of the components that constitute it.
