The lecture is devoted to the analysis of the concepts of freedom that arose at different periods in the history of the Russian state. The confrontation between Orthodox theologians and such representatives of the democratic wing of the Russian intelligentsia as Radishchev and Karamzin, Kuchelbecker and Pestel, Pushkin and Lermontov, etc. is shown. The differences between the categories of "freedom" and "liberty" are studied. The role of Catherine II in the formation of a model of freedom acceptable for an absolutist state is shown. The confrontation between religious and secular understanding of freedom continued in the post-Catherine period. Herzen, Belinsky, Granovsky, Kavelin, Turgenev, Annenkov, Chicherin, etc., on the one hand, and Dostoevsky, Soloviev, Berdyaev, Bulgakov, Pobedonostsev, on the other. The 21st century has once again sharpened the interest of Russian researchers in the problem of freedom. And once again, a confrontation between religious and secular understandings of freedom has emerged.
