This article aims to identify the capabilities and limitations of contemporary technical and software tools for detecting, documenting, and examining crime traces through a critical comparison of recent scientific publications. The analytical corpus comprises 13 journal articles and conference papers. The studies are grouped into the following areas: digital forensics, artificial intelligence, media authenticity verification, three-dimensional documentation, fingerprint examination, forensic genetics, and the analysis of substances and biological traces. The comparative analysis revealed distinctions between the accuracy of evidence recording, the correctness of data processing, and the validity of the resulting reconstruction. For digital tools, a key consideration is their robustness to changes in software environments; for genetic methods, sample quality and computational procedures; and for spectroscopy, the conditions under which traces age and the independence of validation data. The article proposes an approach to assessing the applicability of forensic technologies by examining the relationship between the investigative task, validation conditions, uncertainty, and the verifiability of conclusions. The review is limited by the purposive selection of predominantly English-language publications and uneven access to full texts. The resulting findings provide a basis for developing validation protocols and conducting further research but do not establish the procedural admissibility of specific evidence.
