The application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in digital education is increasingly gaining significance. Technologies can be used with AI to personalize learning, give instant feedback, aid assessment, create educational material and give students access to intelligent tutors and conversational systems. These features can have important implications for the future of e-learning which has been largely based on relatively standardized digital content and learning pathways. This article examines the potential role of AI in the future development of e-learning in higher education, focusing on adaptive learning, intelligent tutoring systems, generative AI, automated feedback and assessment, learning analytics and personalized learning experiences. While simultaneously taking into account relevant issues such as data privacy, algorithmic bias, accuracy, academic integrity, and unequal access to AI tools and students' overreliance on them. AI has been shown to have significant potential for enhancing the adaptiveness of e-learning to individual learners, and for this to be effective, there must be pedagogical supervision and responsible governance. The article concludes that the future of e-learning must not be underpinned by the replacement of educators with AI, but by the effective collaboration between humans and AI, where AI complements education and educators remain the decision-making, interactive and learning agents.
