A time limitation is a constitutive feature of a regulatory sandbox rather than an optional condition of its operation. The study elucidates the substance of this feature and identifies the conditions under which a prescribed term retains its constraining effect. The object of the study is the establishment, operation, and termination of regulatory sandboxes in foreign jurisdictions and Uzbekistan. Formal legal, comparative legal, functional, and systemic methods are applied. Temporariness is distinguished from time limitation: the latter presupposes a predetermined endpoint and corresponding legal consequences. The prescribed term performs four legal functions: ensuring the proportionality of regulatory derogations, enabling verification of the regulatory hypothesis, serving as a legal fact that activates regulatory feedback, and safeguarding the interests of other market participants. An analysis of six regulatory sandbox regimes in Uzbekistan reveals two models: a testing period within a permanent regime linked to an assessment of results, and a fixed term applicable to the regime as a whole. The study’s novelty lies in linking the expiry of the prescribed term to a duty to assess outcomes and in establishing safeguards against the circumvention of the time limitation through repeal, extension, or re-entry.
