Central Government Control in the Bekdoms of Eastern Kashkadarya: Appointments, Taxation, and Petitions (1870–1920)

Annotatsiya

In August 1870, Russian troops under the command of General A. K. Abramov captured Kitab and Shahrisabz, bringing an end to the de facto independent rule of Jurabek and Bababek. As a result of the transfer of these territories to representatives of Emir Muzaffar, their formal affiliation with the Emirate of Bukhara was transformed into direct administrative subordination. The resubordination of Shahrisabz and Kitab to the Emir of Bukhara altered the balance of political forces in the oasis. This article seeks to elucidate these processes through an analysis of A. L. Kun’s records, documents of the Qushbegi chancellery studied by K. Z. Hakimova, and historical and geographical data. Territorial variations in tax amounts, overlapping powers of officials, and repeated tax demands demonstrate the coexistence of central control and local customary practices.
