Representation of character appearance and personality in translation: a comparative study of the English translations of Cho‘lpon’s novel Night and Day

Literary translation involves more than transferring lexical and grammatical meanings from one language to another; it requires reconstructing the artistic, cultural, and psychological dimensions of the original work. Among these dimensions, the representation of character appearance and personality plays a crucial role because it shapes readers’ understanding of fictional characters and the ideological, historical, and cultural context in which they exist. This study examines how descriptions of physical appearance and personality are rendered in two English translations of Cho‘lpon’s novel Night and Day: Christopher Fort’s translation (2019) and Ilhom To‘xtasinov’s translation (2023). Using a qualitative comparative approach, the research analyzes selected descriptions of major characters, including Zebi, Akbarali, Mingboshi and Miryoqub. The analysis is informed by Nida’s Dynamic Equivalence, Newmark’s Semantic and Communicative Translation, Baker’s theory of equivalence, Venuti’s concepts of domestication and foreignization, and House’s functional-pragmatic model. The findings indicate that Fort generally preserves the stylistic richness, psychological complexity, and cultural symbolism of Cho‘lpon’s characterization through context-sensitive lexical choices and communicative strategies. In contrast, To‘xtasinov more frequently relies on literal translation and linguistic simplification, which occasionally weakens descriptive precision and emotional intensity. The study concludes that successful literary translation depends not only on linguistic accuracy but also on the translator’s ability to recreate characterization while maintaining the interaction between language, culture, and artistic intention.
