The article examines the role of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in English Language Teaching, with particular emphasis on its impact on learners’ cognitive autonomy and critical thinking. It analyzes the educational opportunities offered by GenAI alongside the risks associated with excessive reliance on AI-generated content. A human-centered pedagogical perspective is proposed in which AI functions as a supportive educational tool, while learners retain responsibility for analysis, evaluation, reflection, and academic decision-making.
