Lexical and Grammatical Changes in the Academic Writing of Uzbek EFL Learners Under the Influence of Generative AI: A Corpus Analysis

This study employs a corpus-linguistic approach to investigate lexical and grammatical changes in the academic writing of Uzbek-speaking learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) associated with the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools. In recent years, ChatGPT and other large language models (LLMs) have been increasingly used in foreign language education as tools for text generation and editing, grammatical feedback, and the improvement of academic style. Existing research suggests that GenAI tools may positively affect writing quality, feedback, learner motivation, and self-regulated learning processes. However, corpus-based descriptions of lexical and grammatical changes in AI-assisted texts within the Uzbek EFL context remain underexplored. This study compares corpora of AI-free and AI-assisted academic writing and analyzes measures of lexical diversity, academic vocabulary use, lexical density, grammatical errors, and syntactic complexity. The findings make it possible to examine whether the use of GenAI tools can increase the use of academic vocabulary, reduce grammatical errors, and enhance syntactic complexity. At the same time, the study emphasizes that higher linguistic performance in AI-assisted texts does not necessarily correspond to genuine development in learners’ independent language competence.
