Genre, Rhetorical, and Linguopoetic Features of the Prose Speech of Pre-Islamic Arab Women (Based on the Testament of Umāma bint al-Ḥārith)

Annotatsiya

The article analyses an understudied stratum of pre-Islamic Arabic prose — women’s speech — on the material of the testament of Umāma bint al-Ḥārith addressed to her daughter Umm Iyās. The study pursues three tasks: to establish the genre markers of the testament, to compare the dictionary and the contextual meanings of the key lexemes of the text, and to reveal the functions of the rhetorical devices. The analysis relies on classical Arabic dictionaries (Kitāb al-ʿAyn, Lisān al-ʿArab, Mukhtār al-Ṣiḥāḥ) and on modern Arabic scholarship. As a result of the analysis it is shown that such pairs as al-ʿushsh — al-wakr, ama — ʿabd and muwāfaqa — murāfaqa are not a simple synonymy or opposition but devices serving the poetic and compositional construction of the text. The testament is assessed as a specimen of an independent prose genre that has united moral-didactic content with an elevated linguopoetic form.
