Integrating Mathematics and Global Citizenship through Math Detective Activities: A Classroom-Based Study of Student Engagement

Student engagement is an important aspect of effective mathematics education. This study explores the use of Math Detective, a flexible game-based activity that combines mathematical problem-solving with fictional investigations. During the activity, students solve mathematical problems to obtain clues, eliminate incorrect possibilities, and eventually solve a mystery. The approach is flexible, allowing teachers to develop different scenarios according to the mathematical topic, lesson objectives, and students’ interests. The activity can also be integrated with Global Citizenship themes. As part of the study, 48 students completed a questionnaire, and approximately 90% reported positive perceptions of the activity. A separate parent survey also indicated that Math Detective made a particularly strong impression on students compared with other classroom activities. The findings suggest that the Math Detective framework can provide an engaging and adaptable way of organising mathematical practice and problem-solving.
