An Engineering Turning Point in the Lower Reaches of the Amu Darya: Construction of the Tuyamuyun Hydroelectric Complex and Its Socio-Environmental Consequences (1970–1991)

Annotatsiya

Based on historical archival and hydrological-statistical data, this article analyzes the largest engineering transformation that occurred in the 1970s and 1980s in the irrigation system of the lower reaches of the Amu Darya—the Khorezm and Karakalpakstan oases—namely, the construction of the Tuyamuyun Hydroelectric Complex. The study traces the development of the Tuyamuyun complex from its design stages (1953–1954) to its full commissioning in 1987 and examines its multiple functions, including irrigation, power generation, flood protection, transportation, and drinking water supply. Flow statistics from the Kerki, Tuyamuyun, and Chatli-Samanbay hydrological stations are compared across two periods (1956–1980 and 1981–2011), providing a quantitative assessment of the complex’s impact on basin-wide water distribution and the Aral Sea crisis. The scientific novelty of the article lies in analyzing the Tuyamuyun Hydroelectric Complex, for the first time, not as an administrative and economic development confined to a single territory, but as an integrated engineering and hydrological system at the basin scale through a comparison of its design and actual performance indicators.
