Teaching Students to Teach Thinking: A Four-Component Curricular Model for Developing Metacognitive Pedagogical Competence in Undergraduate Teacher Education

A gap between declarative knowledge of pedagogical practice and the ability to implement it was identified using metacognitive pedagogy as an example. A four-component model for preparing future educators was developed and tested, comprising theoretical instruction, simulation-based practice, reflective practice, and mentoring. The effectiveness of the model was evaluated in a quasi-experimental study involving 152 fourth-year students (experimental group, n = 78; control group, n = 74). Changes in competence were assessed using questionnaires, expert evaluation of portfolios, and structured observation of practice. The proportion of students who reached a productive or creative level of competence increased from 26.9% to 70.5% in the experimental group, whereas changes in the control group were modest (from 28.4% to 36.5%). The greatest improvement was observed in lesson design and the expansion of the repertoire of strategies used, which was associated with the practice and reflection components rather than the lecture component. The proposed model was shown to be applicable not only to preschool education but also to professional training programs that require interactive professional judgment.
