Uzbek traditional vocal art represents a complex and multifaceted musical form that demands exceptional technical and physiological preparation. Beyond natural talent, vocalists require rigorous daily practice to maintain the flexibility and tone of the vocal cords, which function as muscles. In recent years, however, less attention has been paid to healthy vocal production and breath control, leading to vocal strain, hoarseness, and loss of tonal color—especially among younger traditional singers. This paper explores the anatomical basis of vocal technique in Uzbek classical singing, examining the role of the larynx and its connection to breath, register shifts, and resonation. The study draws from historical pedagogy and categorizes three primary modes of sound production identified in Uzbek traditional singing: binniy (nasal), guliy (throat), and ishkamiy (diaphragmatic), as defined by respected vocal scholars and performers. It analyzes each technique’s physical mechanisms, stylistic applications, and historical roots, while also dispelling misconceptions around terms such as "falsetto" and highlighting the role of techniques like twang and belting within traditional performance. The paper emphasizes that seasoned performers masterfully blend these techniques, shifting fluidly between registers and styles during a single performance cycle. Furthermore, the study argues for the recognition of Uzbek vocal art as technically equal to—if not more complex than—its Western counterparts. By examining both inherited and learned vocal methods, the paper advocates for a renewed focus on physiological vocal education, which is essential for preserving the richness, clarity, and health of the Uzbek traditional singing voice in contemporary practice.
