Due to sarcopenia developing in the setting of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the conventional creatinine marker loses sensitivity in estimating glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). This highlights the need to investigate the clinical significance of alternative markers such as cystatin C. In the assessment of renal function in patients with COPD, standard creatinine-based evaluation has insufficient diagnostic informativeness. Cystatin C and combined eGFR criteria demonstrate high diagnostic sensitivity for the early detection of “pulmo-renal syndrome” and are recommended for systematic monitoring.
